Oku Soba
尾久そば
Situated right in front of JR Oku Station, Oku Soba serves unpretentious, quick-service bowls, from tempura soba paired with mini curries to fragrant garland chrysanthemum tempura.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Stationed right outside JR Oku Station, Oku Soba offers the effortless welcome of an old-school station-front noodle stand. While it retains the speedy, casual spirit of standing-soba culture, the shop provides counter seating. Doors open at 7:00 on weekday mornings through late into the evening, alongside early weekend hours. Noodles are swiftly plunged into hot water and drenched in piping-hot broth immediately upon ordering, an efficient turnaround that proves invaluable on hurried morning commutes or tight lunch breaks.
A perennial favourite on the menu pairs tempura soba—such as vegetable kakiage—with a mini Japanese curry rice. Dark, robust Kanto-style soy broth envelops gently soft noodles, with the fried tempura batter softening naturally into the soup for a deeply comforting flavour. Matched with home-style curry rice, the combination delivers an affordable, hearty meal that leaves you thoroughly full.
Individual tempura soba bowls offer plenty of variety as well. The shungiku (garland chrysanthemum) tempura soba stands out for the herb's refreshing aroma and pleasant bitterness, which cut cleanly through the rich broth. Bowls can be customized with toppings according to the day's mood, whether dropping in a raw egg to coat the noodles in rich yolk, or opting for potato croquette soba or wild vegetable sansai soba. Between paying cash directly across the counter and spotting canned beers ready on hand, this low-key counter warmly accommodates solo diners stopping in for a relaxed breath of routine.
